As of July16, 2003 Weldtech Training Inc. became the first
training institution to offer welders in Ontario an opportunity to take a one of

meet all other requirements can write the Red Seal exam and become a licensed welder.

Center Develops Training Class for Canada's Automotive Industry
 |
Weldtech Training, Inc., Mississauga, Ont., Canada, has developed a training
program and conducted testing to the requirements of AWS D1.3, Structural
Welding
Code - Sheet Steel, geared toward Canada's automotive industry.
Even though many automotive manufacturers have their own internal standards and training, some members
of the industry decided that welder qualification through an internationally recognized organization
such as the American Welding Society would act as a good benchmark standard for manual gas metal arc
welding operators. |
The test Weldtech developed includes fillet welds and plug welds in the vertical
and horizontal positions on 1.3-mm-thick, coated automotive grade steel. All
welds have to pass visual inspection and then destructive testing. According
to instructor
Jim Murphy, this is the first application of AWS D1.3 qualification in the
Canadian automotive industry. Several groups of workers have taken the
training and been
tested. Companies participating have included Daimler Chrysler, Honda, and
Magna International.
December 1, 2003:
City of Toronto Goes AWS
Weldtech Training Inc., of Mississauga, Ontario, has been awarded a contract by
the City of Toronto to provide welding training and certification for over 50 Millwrights
and Millwright Apprentices. In addition to welding training the City of Toronto
wanted a benchmark standard to rate their employees skill levels for every day
maintenance work, (ie. Welding brackets, and machinery guards). The city decided
to use the AWS D1.1 welding code and have retained Weldtech Training a registered
AWS educational Institution to provide testing and training to these standards.
AWS offers not only welder certification on low carbon steel but also stainless
steel which is used in many of the Cities water treatment plants. Currently Canada
has no engineering or welder qualification standards for stainless steel. All major
welding processes are used in this type of maintenance work with SMAW and GMAW
being the two processes most utilized.
For any welding on pressure vessels or piping the City uses the ASME IX code for
which it has procedures in place and for structural welding contracts work to companies
certified to CSA 47.1. Weldtech has also received inquiries from other municipalities
for similar training and certification programs.
